Artist Statement 작가노트
The biggest difference between painting and photography is that painting is more focused on the creation or composition, but photography is based on reality. Although, photography can also be manipulated and composed, the fundamental notion of reality is embedded since it was invented from people’s strong desire to capture reality. I love the honesty of the photography, thus I want to convey what I believe through the medium.

What I want to capture through photography is things that are eternal, and the first theme of that is ‘breath’. Breathing is the beginning and the end of one’s life, but from perspectives of entire human being, breath is eternal, because everyone must breathe. I believe that the breath has been passed down from generation to generation, endlessly changing its form. Therefore, I chose clouds, which are always transforming and recycling like breath. Everything that moves and changes has a life force that we do not know or understand. With this life force, everything moves and changes while continuously creating new meanings. The reason we do not understand it is because we have different viewpoints and, also, due to lack of communication with humans. I have been feeling the life force from 'clouds', a part of natural phenomena. I recognized and express the cloud that appears and disappears, and continuously changes, as a being that has a life force. The purpose, responsibility and meaning of a photographer are connecting the objects and us by setting up our equipment in-between objects, which we haven’t recognized or known, and us. Therefore, I set my equipment up in-between the cloud and myself.

For expressing time and breath, which have been continued for a long time, pinhole is a great tool because it can accumulate and flow through time. Pinhole accepts and provides the sense of time that we recognize, visual angles little bit differently. Because I am using Pinhole's unique property, which is different from simply operating camera mechanically, also they inspire and breath us to discover the meaning of existence of countless objects which have life forces. Those objects reveal their life forces and meanings in different viewing angles and times. Thus, we can get a step closer to having communication with those objects.
사진과 회화의 다른점은 회화는 창조와 구성적인 의미를 가지고 있으나 사진은 진실에 근거하기 때문이다. 비록 사진도 구성되고 조작되어질 수는 있지만 사진은 진실성이라는 고유한 인식을 지녔다. 그것은 사진은 인간들의 복제되어진 진실에 대한 강렬한 욕망으로부터 탄생되었기 때문이다. 비록 그 진실을 바탕으로 수많은 사진가들은 거짓도 만들어 낼 수 있다. 하지만 사진의 그 진실성을 사랑하기에 내가 믿는것들을 사진을 통해 전하고 싶다.

나는 세상에서 영원한것을 사진을 통해서 담아내고 싶다. 그 첫번째주제는 호흡이다. 호흡이라는건 한사람의 시작과 끝이지만 인간전체의 시각에서는 호흡은 영원한것이다. 왜냐하면 모든 사람은 반드시 호흡해야하기 때문이다. 그 호흡이 세대를 거쳐 이어져 내려오며 수많은 모습으로 끊임없이 움직인다고 믿는다. 그렇기에 나는 ‘투사’의 방식으로 호흡과도 비슷하게 끊임없는 변화와 재생을 가지고 있는 구름을 선택하였다. 움직이고 변화하는 모든것들에는 우리가 미처 모르는 그리고 우리의 방식과는 다른 생명력이 숨어있다고 본다. 그 생명력으로 그 모든것들은 변화하고 이동하며 새로운 의미들을 끊임없이 창조해낸다. 그러나 우리가 그것을 잘 깨닫지 못하는것은 시각의 차이라고 생각한다. 또한 대상과 의 소통의 부재때문이라고 생각한다. 나는 자연현상의 한 부분일수도 있는 ‘구름’에서 그 생명력을 느껴왔고 사라지고 나타나며 그리고 끊임없이 변화하는 구름을 또 다른 하나의 생명력을 가진 존재로서 인식하고 표현하였다. 사진가의 목적, 의무, 의미는 우리가 미처 모르거나 잘 알지못하는 그 숨겨진것들의 앞에 우리의 도구를 세우고 전하는것이라고 생각한다.

핀홀이라는 존재는 ‘시간을 관류하고 축적하는 특성’을 가졌기 때문에 그 수많은 세월동안 이어지고 변화하는 ‘호흡’ 그리고 ‘시간’을 잘 표현해 낼 수 있는 도구라고 생각하였다. Pinhole 은 우리가 인식하고 누리는 시간성 그리고 시각과 다른것을 받아들이고 제공한다. 단순한 기계식카메라의 조작성에 의한것이 아닌 Pinhole 이라는 카메라가 가진 순수의 속성을 이용하기 때문에 나는 비록 지금 나타난 이 모습들이 100%진짜라고 확신할수는 없지만 우리에게 생명력이 존재하는 수많은 대상들에게 존재의 의미를 드러내게 해주는 호흡을 불어넣어준다고 생각한다. 다른 시각과 다른 시간에서 그 생명력은 드러나고 의미를 배출해내기때문이다. 그렇게하여 생명력의 대상과의 대화의 자리로 한발앞으로 나아가게 되는것이다.
