Intro
I viewed the work in the form of '관조, Gwan Jo" (that means 1. Observing objects or phenomenon with calm mind, 2. Awareness beauty directly) and carried out the process of capturing so that the world, the beauty of objects as well their meaning could be realized. The act of incessantly waiting for and accepting the process that reveals the true meaning of the object and its beauty — This is the most adequate way of thinking about time and space, a way which the medium of photography can work through. Though they may be the anonymous people who the city has produced and who live gasping for breath within the city, they clearly create memories, undergoing the process of turning those memories into recollections, and come to cherish time, which is another reiteration of age. The scenery that is revealed in my pictures are the results of ‘관조, Gwan Jo’ on a space that has provided the reiteration of memory and time which belong to all of those people. As a photographer and as the power of photography, are the pictures obtained by contemplating amongst space, time, and object beautiful? Is it solely for just one individual? If not, to have it as beauty that may be granted to the people living in the world of every reiteration is to share the very joyful photographic mirth of '관조, Gwan Jo".
Story
Sometimes ago, I sometimes feeling one’s trace that one left. I have seen and felt the trace that people leave to the world. For this reason, I really wanted to take traces that someone was remaining. In a city where countless people breathlessly move with many stories and purposes, I sometimes reflect on stories and their meanings, which they have left in their paths. Although they only passed a place for a short moment, I believe that people always leave their traces in the world. For artistample, just like when something with a scent has passed by, the scent still remains in that place…
In my photographs, which were shot in such a way, their flow, light and space are artistpressed. I think that there is no cause for a problem by not having the clarity and lucidity in what I have set out to artistpress. It is because although everything is not shown in it, it is a fact that they were there, and it is also the very power of invisible matters. I believe that every people have a something to leave like a scent. I have felt and seen. Also, I have tried to take it. Even though, it sometimes, can be shown and vague but one obvious thing is that one artististence was there. It is trace I think.
I have begun the work of viewing such remaining traces. Amazingly, all those people passing by, laughing, crying, furious, and artistpressionless were in touch with the spaces they went by. It might have been a single picture among the numerous scenic photographs or it might have been simply a scene of a tourist passing through the city. Nevertheless, let's '관조, Gwan Jo’ the true meaning, not the image of a moment. We commonly call the process of fulfilling that unrealized meaning 'art'.

세상과 사물의 아름다움 그리고 그 의미를 깨닫기 위하여 나는 ‘관조’라는 형식으로 바라보고 담아냄의 과정을 행하였다. 그 대상의 진정한 의미 그리고 아름다움이 드러나는 과정을 끊임없이 기다리고 받아들이는 행위. 그것은 사진이라는 매체가 행할 수 있는 시간과 공간에 대한 가장 적절한 사유의 방식인것이다. 도시가 주는 그리고 그 도시속에서 숨가쁘게 살아가는 익명성의 사람들인지언정 분명히 기억을 만들고 그 기억을 추억으로 만드는 과정을 거쳐가며 세월이라는 시간의 또다른 중첩을 간직하게 된다고 생각한다. 내 사진속에서 드러나는 풍경과도 같은 사진들은 그런 모든 사람들의 시간과 기억의 중첩을 제공해준 공간에 대한 ‘관조’의 결과이다. 과연 사진가로서 사진의 힘으로서 공간과 시간 그리고 대상의 사이에서 관조를 통해 얻어진 ‘사진’은 아름다울것인가. 그것이 과연 한 개인을 위한것이가. 아니면 또다른 모든 중첩의 세상에서 살아가는 사람들에게도 주어질 수 있는 아름다움인 것인가는 ‘관조’라는 매우 즐거운 사진적 유희와 함께할 일일것이다.

수많은 사람들이 그들만의 수많은 이야기와 목적을 가지고 숨가쁘게 움직이는 도시에서 난 그들이 지나가고 난 이후에 그들이 남겨놓은 이야기와 의미를 가끔씩 생각해보곤한다. 비록 그들은 한 공간을 잠시 스쳐지나갔지만 난 사람들이 세상에 항상 그들의 흔적을 남기고 있다고 생각한다. 향기를 지닌 존재의 지나간 자리에 그 향기가 남아있듯이…
사람은 영혼과 숨결을 지녔기에 그것이 끝나지 않는한 그것은 끊임없이 세상에 흔적을 남기고 의미를 만들어 낸다. 그 의미가 무엇이냐고 물어본다면 그것은 대답할 수 없다. 그 의미는 그것을 느끼고 볼 수 있는 사람들에 의해 평가되어진다고 본다. 지나간 한순간을 우리는 추억한다. 그 추억의 장소와 시간이 어디인지는 각자의 것이지만 우리는 지나갔던 한때를 추억한다. 추억의 때에 그곳에 남겨두었던 한 형태를 불러오고 그때로 다시금 돌아간다. 지나쳐간 추억의 한때, 그때에 한 사람이 남긴 자국은 미래의 어느때에 그곳으로 돌아갈 통로가 되기에 산길을 걷는 한사람이 돌아가기위해 남겨둔 흔적같이 남겨지는 것이다.
그렇게 남겨진 흔적들을 나는 바라보는 작업들을 시작했다. 울기도, 웃기도, 화내기도 그리고 무표정하게도 지나가는 모든 사람들은 너무나도 신기하리만치 그들이 지나가던 공간과 맞닿아있었다. 수많은 풍경사진중의 한장일 수도있으며, 도시를 지나가던 관광객의 풍경일수도 있다. 하지만 순간의 모습이 아닌 진실한 의미를 ‘관조’하여보자. 깨닫지 못한 의미를 이루어 내는 그 과정을 우리는 흔히 ‘예술’이라고도 부른다.
