올해로 13회를 맞는 동강국제사진제(위원장 김영수)가 7월 18일부터 9월 21일까지 66일 동안 강원도 영월군 동강사진박물관을 중심으로 열린다. 동강사진상 수상자 , 특별기획전, 강원도사진가초대전과 거리설치전 등 총 9가지 세부 전시로 구분돼 사진전문가와 애호가들의 다양한 기호를 충족시킬 전망이다.
동강국제사진제는 제 13회 동강사진상 수상자로 구본창을 선정했다. 그는 이번 전시를 통하여 지난 15년 동안 작업해 온 시리즈 중 동양적 정서를 담아온 <백자>, <풍경>, <탈> 세 가지 주제의 작품을 보여준다. 사물을 바라보고 해석하는 그의 섬세한 눈을 통해 서로 다른 주제가 어떻게 통일된 시선을 보여주는지를 잘 알 수 있다. 국내에서 처음 선보이는 백자 영상 작품을 포함한 40여점의 작품과 작품집, 인쇄물 그리고 보도자료 등도 함께 전시된다.
특별기획전은 <Episodes: 호주 현대사진Australian Photography Now>라는 제목으로 호주를 대표하는 사진가 12명이 참여했다. 심리적이고 연극적이며 사진을 통해 시리즈적 에피소드 개념을 이끌고 있다. 작가 대부분이 호주 원주민으로 현대 사진의 정치적 영향력을 작품에 반영한다. 각자의 관점에서 호주의 역사적, 문화적 특수성을 끌어내기 위해 사진이라는 매체를 다채로운 방식으로 다루고 있다는 점도 주목할 만 하다. 다양한 인종이 어우러져 살아가며 세계 곳곳의 이주 문화가 혼재해 있는 삶을 깊숙이 반영하는 호주 현대 사진예술가들의 작품들은 호주를 이해하고 급속도로 진행되고 있는 세계화에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 중요한 계기가 될 것이다.
강원도사진가전은 사진예술계에서 활발한 활동을 하고 있는 강원도 출신 작가들을 소개한다. 초대 작가들에 의해 전시에 구현된 동시대 의식은 우리가 살고 있는 시대와 공간에 대한 생각의 지평을 넓혀준다.
<영월시선>을 제목으로 하는 거리설치전은 사진의 예술성과 기록적 장치를 통해 영월의 역사를 재고하고 새로운 비전을 제시할 것이다. 신진사진가들에 의해 재현된 영월의 모습은 전시관의 한정된 공간을 벗어나 영월거리에 설치됨으로써 영월 군민과 적극적인 소통을 한다.
이 밖에도 다양한 전시가 준비되어 있다. 13회 동강사진박물관 소장품전으로 인간의 존재와 인간 중심의 삶을 고민했던 휴머니스트인 최민식을 기린다. 보도사진가전의 <신의 땅>, 영월군사진가전의 <쌍용의 전설이 깃든 ‘쌍용리’>, 평생교육원 사진전의 <Growing Up 2014>이 관람객을 찾을 것이다. 포트폴리오 리뷰 수상자전에서 최우수 포트폴리오로 선정된 김전기는 <보이지 않는 풍경II>을 통해 보이지 않는 적을 경계하기 위한 군사접경지역에서 일어나는 변화와 일상의 모습을 보여준다.
대중과의 소통을 위한 교육프로그램도 준비되어 있다. 전국 초등학생 사진 일기 공모전, 2014동강사진워크샵과 사진공개강좌가 열린다. 2014동강사진상 수상자인 구본창의 강좌를 포함하고 있는 동강사진워크샵은 전문가의 욕구를 충족시키고 나아가 사진예술의 저변확대에 기여할 것이다.
Dong Gang International Photo Festival (directed by KIM Young-soo, president of the management committee), which marks its 13th anniversary this year, is held for 66 days from July 18th to September 21st in the Dong Gang Museum of Photography in Yeongwol County, Gangwon Province. Consisting of nine exhibitions including Dong Gang Photography Award Exhibition, Dong Gang International Photo Festival Special Exhibition, Gangwon Province Photographers Invitation Exhibition, and Street Installation Exhibition, the event is expected to fulfill the diverse tastes of photography experts and lovers. It selected KOO Bohnchang as the winner of the 13th Dong Gang Photography Award. After returning from Germany in the late 1980s, KOO, the pioneer of Korean art photography, stressed through his early works that were largely ideological and subjective that photography is not a cheap maneuver, but a fruit of intellect and sophisticated sensitivity. The exhibition is comprised of three themes, namely Landscape and Man, Masks and White Porcelains, portraying his artistic oeuvres that have pioneered the experimental potentials of photography for the past 30 years as one of the first-generation artists in Korean photography. The special exhibition was participated in by 12 photographers who represent Australia under the title Episodes: Australian Photography Now. It contains psychological, dramatic features, drawing the concept of serial episodes through photography. Many of the artists are native Australians who have embodied the political implications of contemporary photography into their works. It is also remarkable that each of them has utilized photography in distinctive ways through their own points of view in order to elicit the historical, cultural peculiarity of Australia. Their works, a reflection into the life in the coexistence of diverse immigrant cultures from all over the world, will provide an understanding of Australia as well as the rapid pace of globalization. Gangwon Province Photographers Invitation Exhibition introduces the works of the artists from Gangwon Province who are active in the art photography industry. The awareness of contemporaneity that they have materialized in their works helps broaden the scope of our thinking in regards to the time and space we live in. The street installation exhibition titled Yeongwol Gaze will recount the history of Yeongwol and offer a new vision through the artistic qualities of photography and its recording function. The town is reproduced by the hands of the young photographers and is installed in the streets of Yeongwol beyond the limited space of the museum, thereby promoting active communication with the residents. There are a variety of exhibitions apart from the ones mentioned above. The 13th Dong Gang Museum of Photography Acquisitions honors the late CHOI Minshik, a humanist who contemplated the existence of human beings and the life that is centered upon them. Moreover, visitors are welcomed to Photojournalists Exhibition the Land of Gods, Yeongwol County Photographers Exhibition Ssangyong-ri, Where the Legend of Two Dragons Resides, and Continuing Education Exhibition Growing Up 2014. In the Portfolio Review Award Exhibition, KIM Jeonki portrays through Invisible Scenery, the best portfolio in the 2013 Dong Gang Photography Workshop Portfolio Review, the changes and daily lives occurring in the midst of the mission to guard against invisible enemies in the border area. In addition, a set of educational programs to promote communication with the public are prepared. The festival also features the photography diary contest for elementary students across the nation, the 2014 Dong Gang Photography Workshop and the open lecture. The workshop, which includes a lecture by KOO Bohnchang, the winner of the 2014 Dong Gang Photography Award, will satisfy the appetite of experts and contribute to the expansion of the art photography industry.
