The Museum of Photography, Seoul will feature the exhibition Magnum’s First , organized by Magnum Photos (founded in 1947), a photographic co-operative of great diversity and distinction in Europe and USA owned by its photojournalist-members. Rediscovered in an Innsbruck cellar in 2006, the first Magnum’s group exhibition , Gesicht der Zeit , was initially presented in five Austrian cities between June 1955 and February 1956. After months of complex restoration work, the original 83 prints are now available for presentation. Presented in the exhibition are for example, one of the most important series by Henri Cartier-Bresson, 18 photographs of Mahatma Gandhi’s last moments and his cremation .
The show also introduces vintage prints by pioneers of photojournalism, Werner Bischof, Robert Capa, Ernst Haas, Erich Lessing, Jean Marquis, Inge Morath and Marc Riboud. The Korean version of a comprehensive catalogue will be published to celebrate the first hosting of this historical exhibition in Asia.

한미사진미술관은 미국과 유럽 내 세계적인 보도사진가들의 에이전트인 매그넘 포토스(Magnum Photos, 1947년 창립)와 협력하여 《Magnum’s First》사진전을 4월 4일부터 8월 15일까지 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2016년 한-불 수교 130주년을 맞아 양국이 지정한 ‘2015~2016 한-불 상호교류의 해’를 기념하는 미술관의 첫 번째 전시이다.
《Magnum’s First》는 전시 그 자체로도 스토리가 있는 전시이다. 1947년에 매그넘 포토스를 창립한 로버트 카파, 앙리 카르티에-브레송의 작품이 포함된 이번 전시는 전시제목 그대로 매그넘의 창립 후 첫 전시이다. 사실 이 전시의 존재가 알려진 지는 그리 오래되지 않았다. 《시대의 얼굴Gesicht der Zeit(Face of Time)》이란 제목으로 1955년 6월부터 1956년 2월까지 오스트 리아의 다섯 도시에서 순회전을 마친 후 그 존재가 까마득히 잊혀졌었다. 그러다 50년이 지난 후 오스트리아 인스부르크 주재 프랑스문화원의 창고에서 2006년에 두 개의 크레이트(나무상자)에 담긴 전시작들이 발견됨으로써 그 존재가 세상에 다시금 알려지게 되었다. 전시 제목은 《Face of Time》에서 《Magnum’s First》으로 바뀌었고 철저한 고증을 바탕으로 복원된 포토저널리즘의 산실이자 1950년대 시대의 진실된 얼굴이다. 전시에는 참여 사진가들이 구축하고자 했던 사진에 대한 신념과 매그넘의 정체성이 반영되어 있다.
특별히 앙리 카르티에-브레송의 대표 연작 중 간디의 생애 마지막 모습과 장례식을 담은 18점이 최초로 한국에 소개된다. 이 작업은 1948년 작가가 인도를 방문하여 취재하던 중 간디가 총살 당하여 그의 마지막 모습과 장례식 현장을 담게 된 전설적인 연작이다. 1948년 『라이프』지 표지에 단편적으로 소개된 후 처음으로 이번 전시를 통해 전체 연작이 소개되었다. 이외에도 베르너 비쇼프, 로버트 카파, 에른스트 하스, 에리히 레싱, 장 마르키, 잉게 모라스, 마크 리부 등 다큐멘터리 사진의 선봉에 서있는 작가 총 8인의 오리지널 흑백프린트 83점을 소개한다.
MAGNUM’S FIRST 다큐멘터리 사진의 산 역사, 매그넘 포토스 최초의 사진전 잊혀진지 50년 프랑스, 독일, 스페인, 헝가리를 거쳐 2015년 아시아 첫 상륙 전시 개막일에 맞춰 매그넘 포토스의 해외교류전시 디렉터 안드레아 홀즈헤르Andrea Holzherr가 방한하여 가자간담회와 오픈렉처를 가질 계획이다. 전시와 함께 한국판 『Magnum’s First』 도록이 발간될 예정이다.
