Silent Boundaries is the series, which PARK KI HO photographed redevelopment areas designated to be soon removed for 4 years from 2013 to 2017. These areas include the Donuimun area, Mia-dong, Bugahyeon-dong, and Gireum-dong. The series title ‘Silent Boundaries’ would imply ‘a physical boundary’ between general area and the redevelopment zones, one day designated to be demolished all at once. It could also signify the ‘limits and bounds of life,’ which cast over the evicted residents. PARK’s images are vanished vestiges of the past and at the same time marks of the memory that have remained in our connection with photographic subjects. His early memories and personal sensibility are condensed into the series, and reflected both in form and matter in a rather immediate style. In addition, after the accumulated experiences ranging from photo journalism to commercial photography, the series demonstrates both the diligence of journalistic photos and the refinement of commercial ones at the same time, which verifies PARK’s photographic career of 30 years.

Park Ki Ho

Born in 1960 in Seoul, he moved to the United States as a child and studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1986. After returning back to Korea in 1987, he worked for various international magazines including Time, Business Week, Fortune and Forbes, and operated a very successful commercial photography. In 2007, he had his first private exhibition called Photography & Texture which was a combination of large photographic prints with three dimensional objects. After his one show, he went back to RISD to earn his master's degree. His thesis project Everything Must Go, a documentation of empty storefronts across the U.S. during the 2008 financial crisis, was exhibited in New York, and in Boston. After returning back to Seoul, with his newly attained sensibility of empty storefronts, he began documenting deserted old towns that were about to be demolished for new townhouse projects. They were exhibited in France at Richelieu under the title What We Left Behind in 2016. Currently he teaches at Yonsei University Songdo International Campus and Graduate School.
