Photographer Byung-Hun MIN has been clearly indicating the way he looks at objects and what he is interested since his 1987 exhibition Trivial Landscape. He has created a new vision through his original analog photography which is printed in an outstanding quality. By taking images such as landscapes of small grass on the side of the road and wasteland photography, he broke down the stereotypes about subject in photography and focused on how he could see one object differently. Therefore, the experience and time accumulated from the site of his life were built up inside, which has been expressed as works, and made its way. The Museum of Photography, Seoul presents photography exhibition Moss from February 23 to May 18, which is consisted with Byung-Hun MIN’s new work series. In this series, it is hard to find the vague middle tone, which has been understood as the speciality of Byung-Hun MIN’s photography. He walks slowly by himself and collects the light and wind that come into his eyes. As he moves his home to Gunsan, he found different contrast tones and various lights. While chasing for the light, driven by the breath of the earth, he faces ‘Moss’ at the end of invisible light and traces of time. Through his work, Byung-Hun MIN expresses the original life of a deep, dreary area and the image of moss through thrillingly directness. Moss is the first group of plants to start a land life. Since its unusual structure as a plant, it sticks close to the ground or symbiotic against trees and stones. One can distinguish the shape of a moss through the sparkle in the moment of intense sunlight gleam from the moist, and estimate its range only when its lean or lay down against a stone or tree. Byung-Hun MIN boldly reveals the tenacious vitality of the moss living from the beginning to the present, the uncomfortable presence of damp, sticky moss that emits water and light and the barrenness and details of the shady place that nourishes the moss. Moss seems peaceful as if is hidden from view, but sometimes frightening to see the swarming figure. Seeing is to accepting what is necessary to understand the world, and is the essence of life. Still, Byung-Hun MIN sees the world in his own way, he traces vacuous beauty and light which is not able to hold since it looks different at every moment, unable to capture its essence even in front of the eyes, and which can only be seen in the deep nature at one moment. And still, interpret ‘ordinary things’ and the world through his special view.
