Blues in ‘Ant-Village’

The ‘Ant-Village’ in Hongje-dong Seodaemun-gu is one of the rare remaining shanty towns in Seoul, and was formed by refugees during the Korean War as they built the shacks. Currently, 420 residents are living in the ‘Ant-Village;’ many of them moved there due to redevelopment plans in their previous neighborhoods. Most of the buildings in the village are unlicensed. This is an area where the gas pipeline has not even been installed despite the fact that it is an indispensable utility for basic life, and that the village has long been mentioned as an area where a development and preservation plan is needed by Seoul City. The City of Seoul passed the “proposal for the change of Type 1 district unit plan and the determination of district unit plan” regarding 34,611 ㎡ sized ‘Ant-Village’ in Seoul City in 2009, and selected the area as a candidate for the residential environment management project in 2012. However, due to the condition that “this area is allowed to construct only detached and shared houses with less than 4 floors, rather than apartments, applied by a maximum 150% of the floor space index,” private construction companies have yet to come out to construct buildings. Today, the residents are still “living” in a village without a gas pipeline.

The ‘Ant-Village’ became populated by the poor after the Korean War and has the evidence of having gone through the modern history of Seoul. Was it to comfort the harsh times that the town endured? A few years ago, several public agencies and volunteer groups have started to draw murals on the crumbling walls, stairs and areas around the village. However, just as a beautiful flower cannot last more than 100 days, the figures on the murals are gradually fading. When I first visited the ‘Ant-Village’, there was a blue sky and cumulus painted on the walls, making the village cozy. However, when I visited there again, there was a cracked sky on the wall. In an area where depressing times have accumulated, the affectionate attention to console sorrow through the murals of the ‘Ant-Village’ have turned into a sad time again. The photos of “Blues in ‘Ant-Village’” that recorded the ‘Ant-Village’ and murals may depict the eyes of each and every one of us standing in the middle of our sad times.

Photos record “the moment.” The images in a photo cut the flow of time and show the aspect in the form of a “current.” In other words, a piece of a photo has the accumulated times from the past condensed in the moment of “now.” The “Blues in ‘Ant-Village’” is composed of the photos of the ‘Ant-Village,’ printed using the Cyanotype process. Cyanotype, widely known as the blueprint, has been mainly used for construction or machine sketches. Thus, this “blue print” image evokes the meaning of hopeful plans and designs for the future. The trace of time remains in the ‘Ant-Village,’ and the stories piled within history will be spoken in the language of a “blue print” for the future.
