1928년 터키에서 태어난 아라 귈레르Ara Güler는 세계 최고의 사진가다. 전 세계의 모습을 기록했지만 아라 귈레르의 심장은 늘 터키 이스탄불에 맞춰 뛰고 있다. 평생을 터키와 이스탄불을 담는 작업에 몰두한 그는 ‘이스탄불의 눈The Eye of Istanbul’이라 불린다.
터키의 국가적 기록으로 추앙받는 그의 작업들은 너무도 방대하지만 그중 백미는 단연 ‘이스탄불’ 작업이다. 유럽과 아시아, 기독교와 이슬람교가 오랜 세월 교차되고 스며든 흔적이 가득한 나라, 터키. 유럽과 아시아 두 대륙 사이에 발 딛고 선 세계 유일의 도시 이스탄불의 옛 골목에서 살아가는 사람들, 생선을 잡기 위해 유럽과 아시아를 품은 보스포루스 Bosphorus 해협으로 향하는 터키 어부들의 삶까지 아라 귈레르의 프레임은 늘 사람들을 향하고 있다. 아라 귈레르의 ‘이스탄불’ 작업은 그곳에서 살아가는 익명의 사람들이 주인공인 것이다.
“세상은 인간을 위해서 존재한다. 사람이 없는 삶은 존재하지 않는다.
그래서 나의 사진은 항상 사람을 담고 있으며
아야소피아 성당을 촬영할 때조차도 나에게는 지나가는 사람이 더 중요하다.”
작가는 그의 사진에서 인간 존재에 가장 큰 의미를 두며 스스로를 ‘시각적 역사가’라고 여긴다. 사진은 인간의 기억과 추억을 그리고 그들의 인생, 특히 그들의 고통을 보여주어야 한다고 작가는 믿는다. 이스탄불의 구석구석 모든 요소들 이 정직하게 라이카 카메라의 뷰 파인더 속에 담겼다.
국내에는 최초로 선보이는 아라 귈레르의 작업은 1950년대에서 1970년대까지 고대 실크로드의 서쪽 끝, 터키의 모습이 짙은 서정성과 강렬함으로 우리에게 찾아든다. 이번 전시에서는 국내 관람객들을 위해 특별히 100여 점의 작품을 선별, 새롭게 흑백은염사진으로 제작했으며 그중 40여 점은 작가가 직접 프린트와 프레임을 선정한 귀한 작품들이다.
아라 귈레르의 개인 뮤지엄에 오랜 기간 소장된 그의 작품들, 과거 어디서도 만나볼 수 없었던 터키와 이스탄불의 고혹적인 모습을 이번 전시에서 만날 수 있다. 그가 기록한 이스탄불은 오늘날 우리가 도저히 만날 수 없는 이스탄불이기에 더욱 아련하고 값지다. 아라 귈레르의 눈으로 담아낸 도시와 사람들은 노벨 문학상 수상자인 오르한 파무크(Orhan Pamuk, 1952~ )가 그려낸 '한 도시에 대한 숨 막히는 초상이자 죽어버린 문명에 대한 애가哀歌'를 너무도 잘 보여준다.

Ara Güler is the world’s best photographer who was born in Turkey in 1928. He has documented all over the world in his photographs, but his heart is always at Istanbul, Turkey. He is called as “The Eye of Isatanbul” since he immersed to capture Turkey and Istanbul during his entire life. ‘Istanbul’ is the highlight among the huge series of works which have been hailed as national documents.
Turkey is a country with many cultural faces as Europe, Asia, Christianity and Islam intersects for many decades. People living in the old street of Istanbul, the only country which stands on both continent Asia and Europe, and fishermen’s life story who heads to the Bosphorus that embraces also Asia and Europe, likewise, Ara Güler’s frame always head towards to human. In Güler’s ‘Istanbul’, anonymous people are the subject matter who lives there.
“Nothing matters anymore when love of mandkind is lost.
A life without human cannot exist.
Therefore my pictures always include person,
even when I'm taking a picture of Aya Sofia,
what counts is the person passing by who stands for life.”
Güler attaches the greatest importance to human presence in his photographs and describes himself as a “ visual chronicler” . He believes that photography should provide a memory of people, of their lives and especially their suffering. Each part and every element of Istanbul is honestly captured through his view finder of Leica.
This is the very first show in Korea, and the image of Turkey from 1950s to 1970s where the west end of the ancient Silk Road comes to us with deep lyricism and intensity. About 100 pieces were specially selected and newly printed in gelatin silver prints for Korean audience, and about 40 works among them are more valuable since they were framed and selected by Ara Güler himself. We will be able to face the works that we have never seen before of the fascinating Istanbul and Turkey and also the vintage collections from Ara Güler’s personal museum. Istanbul that Güler has documented is more delicate and valuable because it is Istanbul that most people will never encounter.

1950년대 후반 『타임-라이프Time-Life』, 『파리 마치Paris Match』, 『슈테른Stern』, 『런던 선데이 타임스 London Sunday Times』 등의 저명한 잡지에 사진을 기고해 오던 그는 1960년대 초 앙리 카르티에-브레송(Henri Cartier-Bresson, 1908~2004)의 추천으로 ‘매그넘 포토스Magnum Photos’ 사진가로 활동을 시작한다. 『영국 보도사진 연감 British Journal of Photography Year Book』에서 세계 최고의 사진가 일곱 명 중 한 명으로 지목됐으며 1962년에는 독일 ‘Master of Leica’ 로 선정되어 명실공히 터키를 대표하는 세계적인 사진가로서의 인지도를 가지게 된다.
세계적인 스포트라이트를 받은 그의 무수히 많은 작업 중에서도 노아의 방주에 대한 특집 사진은 무려 100장 이상이 ‘매그넘 포토스’를 통해 소개되었고, 터키 아디야만Adiyaman에 있는 고대 유적 넴루트Nemrut산, 잊힌 도시 아프로디시아스Aphrodisias 또한 그의 유명한 작업들 중 하나다. 번성했던 터키의 고대문명, 하지만 세월 속에 잊혀진 그 숨결과 가치가 아라 귈레르의 사진작업을 통해 새롭게 생명을 잉태한 것이다.

Ara Güler had contributed photographs to renowned magazines such as Time-Life, Paris Match, Stern and London Sunday Times in the late 1950s. Around the early 1960s, he joined ‘Magnum Photos’ as a photojournalist on the recommendation of Henri Cartier-Bresson(1908~2004).
