Youngdon Jung’s work is about his contemplation of things and sceneries he accidentally comes across which are both familiar and unfamiliar and inevitably overlooked unless inspected with a keen eye. As a student of photography, his expression lies in capturing the moment when a familiar scene shifts into something that is not. His first solo exhibition Evocation; Ventilation (2014) showcases Ants (2013-2014), a serial work about movements of people seen from the rooftop of a high-rise apartment building. 송은 아트큐브는 2015-2016 전시지원 프로그램 선정작가 정영돈의 개인전 “Wondering Wandering”을 선보인다. 정영돈은 일상적 경험에서 주시하지 않으면 알아차릴 수 없는 낯선 모습들에 호기심을 갖고 우연히 마주한 사물과 풍경, 인물 등을 탐구한다. 사진을 전공한 그는 익숙한 풍경이 어느 한 순간 특별하게 느껴지는 시점을 포착하는 방식으로 작업해왔다.

이번 전시에서는 작가의 거주지인 파주 부근에서 발견한 다양한 사물 및 인물을 다룬 [Wondering Wandering](2011-2015) 시리즈를 선보이며 도시 안에서 일어나는 수많은 현상과 변화를 조명한다. 파주는 신도시로 지정된 후 택지개발, 산업단지 조성 등 급속한 변화가 진행되었고 군 휴가를 나와 귀가하던 그는 자신이 서있는 곳 조차 짐작하지 못할 만큼 바뀐 거리에서 길을 잃었다. 그의 작업은 당시 집을 찾아가기 위해 주변을 헤매던 중 마주한 생경한 풍경과 사물에 대한 관심에서 시작되었으며 지난 5년간 관찰한 주변 곳곳의 모습을 꾸밈없이 있는 그대로 보여준다. 갈림길을 비추고 있는 거리의 반사경, 콘크리트 틈새 잡초를 감싸고 있는 철물, 연통에서 나온 듯 화분 위에 놓인 달걀 껍질 등 호기심 어린 시선으로 바라 본 사물들은 연관성 없어 보이지만 뜻 밖의 장소에서 한 화면 안에 포착됨으로써 무수한 사건과 시간의 흐름을 추측하게 한다. 또한 작가는 익숙한 거리에서 낯선 풍경을 찾아 다니는 여정에서 우연히 만난 사람들과 본인이 느끼는 파주의 모습에 대해 묻는 등 진솔한 대화를 이어갔고 주변에서 적합한 장소를 찾아 인물의 모습을 연출 없이 자연스레 찍는다. 개인의 이야기를 들을 수는 없지만 울타리 앞 상기된 표정으로 서있는 학생들, 갈림길에 서 있는 프로골퍼를 꿈꾸는 학생, 거대한 나무에 기대 앉아 있는 버스 기사 아저씨 등 인물의 상황을 대변하는 듯한 사진 속 배경은 그들의 심경을 예측하도록 유도한다. 이후 파주와 집 주변 지도를 각각 그려 보내줄 것을 요청하고 이들에게 받은 지도를 함께 선보임으로써 개개인의 시선으로 바라 본 지역의 모습을 보여준다. 작가는 군사지역이자 재개발 지역인 파주의 특수성에 집중하기보다 도시는 어떤 곳이든 개인의 경험과 기억에 따라 특정한 면을 지니고 있다는 점에 주목하며 표면적으로 드러나는 모습 외에도 이면에 숨겨진 이야기를 드러낸다. 특히 작가는 촬영한 사물과 인물의 형태에서 선•면 등 조형적으로 유사한 점을 찾아 함께 설치하는 방식으로 관객이 자신의 기억에 의해 새로운 이야기를 만들도록 유도하고 이러한 과정이 순환하는 삶의 한 순간임을 보여준다.
정영돈은 이처럼 주변에서 호기심을 자극하는 특별한 사물과 인물 등 다양한 매개체를 만나는 ‘의아한 산책’을 통해 이들의 관계와 시간의 흐름을 유추해 나간다. 작가는 자신이 오랫동안 살아왔던 익숙한 장소를 깊이 관찰하고 그간 인지하지 못했던 새로운 양상을 찾는 과정을 통해 자신의 삶을 되돌아 보고 지향점을 발견하고자 한다.
“우리는 삶에 대해 매우 익숙한 믿음에 의존하면서도 낯선 풍경에 당황한다. 그러한 풍경들은 공허하면서도 어느 순간 우리에게 매우 흥미롭게 다가오기도 한다. 이 모순적인 것들 속에서 삶의 형식과 질서, 무수한 차이들이 어떻게 관계 맺고 있는지 이해하고 싶었다.”

For this exhibition, Jung presents to us Wondering Wandering (2011-2015), a series about the diverse things and people he encounters in his place of residence Paju, bringing to light an array of circumstances and changes that occur in the city. Following its designation as a new development city, Paju has gone through a storm of rapid changes in terms of real estate and industrial complex expansion. While serving in the military, Jung returned home for leave to find himself literally lost in the streets of his home town that had been so drastically transformed during his absence. The series begins with this experience and his interest for the strange streets and objects he confronts while trying to find his bearings, continuing for five years, to show blunt, unadorned observations he makes of his surrounding, like the reflective street mirror that reveals the split in the road, iron goods that surround shrubs peeking out from between concrete edges, and a stovepipe looking plant pot filled with broken egg shells. At the end of his curiosity lie seemingly unrelated objects found together in an unexpected place or situation, that are then captured together in one photographic frame allowing viewers to imagine the numerous incidents and passages of time that could possibly exist. While on his journey scouring the familiar streets for unfamiliar sceneries, the artist meets and converses with people about such things like what Paju means to him and so on. At times, he takes unstaged, natural pictures of them at a suitable location nearby. While we are not aware of their stories, the background of the pictures seems to elaborate each situation, encouraging us to imagine what is going through the minds of say the two students standing slightly nervously by the fence, the teenager with dreams of becoming a pro-golfer standing at the split in the road, the bus driver sitting leaning against a gigantic tree, and more. Their stories and links to Paju are personalized as drawn maps of the individuals are exhibited side by side, showing the cityscape seen from their eyes. Rather than focusing on the military and re-development sides of Paju, Jung hones in on the fact that a city can be any place an individual’s experience and memories define it to be and uncovers the stories within, in addition to the apparent external appearances. Jung also finds similarities of shapes such as lines, planes, etc. between photographed objects and his human subject forms so that audiences can add to his existing memory and thereby illustrate how the process is a moment in the cycle of life.
Such are the ways that Jung encounters various mediums of special things and people of his surrounding that spark his curiosity, and through his “wondering wanderings” he attempts to find the relationships and passages of time involved. By deliberately scrutinizing his long-time home town, he is able to find new aspects and appearances from the familiar, and through this process he is able to look back on his own life and find a forward destination.
“When it comes to life, we rely heavily on the promise of the familiar while being uneasy when met with the unfamiliar. Those unfamiliar moments can be meaningless but at times can hold us with the utmost intrigue. And it is in the midst of these contradictions that I wanted to understand how the format and order of life and the existing indefinite disparities are intertwined with each other.”
