Gallery EM is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Jae Yong Rhee, entitled Memories of the Gaze, from April 12 to May 12. This is the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery since his last show in 2014. This exhibition will feature about 17 new celadons and Buddha statues from his ongoing series Memories of the Gaze. At this exhibition, viewers will have the chance to see the artist’s continuous attempts to expand the boundaries of photography via the layered documentation of objects’ time and space, surpassing the medium’s natural capacity to capture only the present moment. Jae Yong Rhee continuously seeks to overcome the limitations of the individual gaze by capturing memories in his photographs. The objects in his photographs are remembered by the artist’s gaze, and this gaze becomes layered memories, which are then given three dimensions. Rhee uses his camera to document one subject on his camera for a minimum of a few months to at most 10 years. During post-production, he layers images of lowered transparencies until these images are compressed into a final image, overlapped with past iterations of the gaze. This method allows Rhee to utilize temporal materials to defeat the characteristic limitation of photography: the inability for time and space to coexist. Furthermore, photography that is bounded by present moments paradoxically carries the time and the gaze associated with the objects depicted beyond the boundaries of the present moment. Therefore, Jae Yong Rhee’s series Memories of the Gaze is the result of the artist’s deep and long contemplation and forceful attempts to capture the time and space surrounding objects in a single photographic image. In dealing with his subject matter, such as nature, city panoramas, rice mills, and artifacts, Rhee’s utmost quest is to keep the balance between a fading force and an enduring force. Visualized through the accumulation of translucent images of the ever-changing existence of the subject matter, the Memories of the Gaze series opens a new cognitive door by recombining memories from the past to the present and into the future. In particular, the main subject matter, the artifacts shown in the exhibition, existed in the faded past, still exist today and will exist in the future through national preservation. Even if the memories are of the forgotten past, such past memories/histories can be brought to the audiences of the present, and present moments can be brought to future audiences, which will constitute past memories. If Rhee’s previous works from the Memories of the Gaze series reflected on fading existence, the works in this exhibition simultaneously capture forces that disappear and those that endure. In so doing, Rhee suggests to the audience a new time and space, allowing for more expanded ‘memoires of the gaze.’

Memories of the Gaze

[Memories of the Gaze]
