GoEun Museum of Photography is celebrating its 10th anniversary with "The Beginning and Beginning" project in 2017 to 2018, marking yet another start as it commemorates the moment of its first beginning. The integrated project will present a vision for the new future, as it looks back at the last 10 years of GoEun Museum of Photography, while it recalls Korean photography over the years from an art historical point of view. The project will commence with GoEun Museum of Photography's annual project Busan Observation 2017, displaying the works of Chung Chu Ha, a photographer who focuses on the issue of nuclear energy and the anxiety hidden in everyday life. Busan Observation is a decade long project, assigning an experienced and talented photographer every year to document the history and local colors of Busan in his or her own unique views which are exhibited at the Museum once completed. Previous participants Kang Hong Goo (2013), Choi Kwang Ho (2014), Lee Gap Chul (2015), Kang Yong Suk (2016), are followed by the fifth artist Chung Chu Ha, who have captured areas across Haeundae to Gori Nuclear Power Plant, as well as the sceneries and lives of Gijang-gun located in between the two places.

Just as GoEun Museum of Photography is announcing a new start based on its history of 10 years, Chung Chu Ha too is making new attempts through this exhibition, while continuing his previous path. With the focus on Haeundae and Gijang where Gori Nuclear Power Plant stands, Busan seen through his eyes are ambivalent just like the combination of two disparate words, "Sand Ice-cream". Haeundae is one of the biggest tourist destinations in Korea, an extravagant place attracting thousands of people. Then there is the nuclear plant and the unlively sceneries of Gijang. The value and danger of nuclear energy, mundane lives and the history of life created within are all part of Busan and the other side of the city. Chung tries to see beyond the visible phenomenon of Busan or those certain signs that are yet to be exposed, and lay them out through photography. How can he reveal the two sides of Haeundae, the delicate anxiety invisible to the eye and the obscure signs? What Chung Chu Ha sees from Busan becomes more than personal views and leads to a broader question.

In order to expose the anxiety that is invisible, but certainly lurking in our lives already, Chung chose to use different structures and formats. Through bizarre sceneries and the lives surrounding them, he concentrates on the "empty irony". The exhibition is composed in four parts: the cheery daily lives surrounding the power plant, symptoms created by irony, the two sides of Haeundae, and the awkward sceneries of Gijang-gun located between Gori and Haeundae. The parts are titled as A Pleasant Day II, using light tones to capture Imrang Beach and the sceneries of the beach close from the nuclear power plant, The Salt Dance visualizing signs of anxiety through panoramas that distort the buildings and subjects, Water under the Wind expressing disappearance using over exposure, and The Strange Place describing the people and landscapes of downtown Gijang.

How are representation and communication of photography possible? This challenge by Chung is meaningful because he has tried to find that moment expressible in photography and create a scene, while embracing the limits and potentials of photography at the same time. As he has made clear himself, his work is not a solution to the complicatedly twisted nuclear issue. However, his work urges us to look back at the reality hidden beneath the already exposed phenomenon and picture how the signs of anxiety hidden inside are so close to us. History is accumulated and newly created from the daily lives that are small and trivial,. His work too begins again from where he started from. "The Beginning and Beginning".

Busan is a city that has faced the dynamic era of Korea squarely. It is also the first place to adopt photography and is a gateway open to the world where diverse cultures mingle with energy. Through GoEun Museum of Photography’s Annual Project Busan Observation, multiple faces of Busan will be discovered by skilled Korean photographers which will be more than simple documentation. They will become the jewels of Korean photography while contributing to the expansion of historical and cultural spectrums in the Busan.
