PM 4:30 at dawn, on the road to Chagan Lake, which has been in my dream for long time.
The severe cold which is beyond my imagination passes through my skin, breathlessly going deep into the bottom of the heart. Heavily armed with the best thickness of clothes that I can, effective temperature is not measureable. Inside the mini-bus which was not pre-heated and thus, has already become a freezer, the icy air, permeated through here and there without permit, enters like an uninvited guest. The frost-flower on the window in various forms seems to have mythic stories about the legend twining around the Chagan Lake.

Won Chun-Ho

Chagan Lake, Breathing in the Legend of Genghis Khan

Won Chun-Ho

AM 4:30 at dawn, on the road to Chagan Lake, which has been in my dream for long time.

In the pitch darkness, about 30 minutes’ driving in the ice road with wheeze on the surface of frozen Chagan Lake and around the time when daunted by the vastness of spacious and endless Chagan Lake, a group of fishermen on horse-wagon going for fishing is seen out of the window of the bus. From the fully wrapped but shabby-looking clothes, they send warm smile to us in the heart of the cold winter,

Chagan Lake, like a boundless ocean where the end of the horizontal line is not seen. Laboring on the ice of the lake, directly exposed to strong wind and with no resting place, is extremely hard job like the bitter cold where the temperature varies at around Celsius 30 degree below the freezing temperature.

Fish-flowers blossoms on ice.

In the afternoon, at the time of harvest, fishes caught in the net serially push out their heads out of the net by the power of the horses. Fishers are also busy, putting the nets in order. Men are joyfully enjoying the feast of fishing and abundant harvest, and in the meantime, the fishes caught, which might have lived peaceful life in the lake, felt gradually numbed throughout all their bodies in the horrible cold and breathe the last breath of their short life,

I answer my own questions about the way how to interpret the symbolic meaning in principle and life to be given by the labor. Civilization was the result of histories of fierce struggles to get over the nature and lead into convenient life. Winter fishing in Chagan Lake is one of the few gemstones left on earth, to fight the nature in the most primitive ways, i.e., by purely with labor power and without conveniences of civilization. Also, the attitude of enjoying life by positively responding to the fearless labor in the extreme environment and converting it to joy is a kind of sacred and marvelous like big fishes caught and pulled over on the ice. There seems to be no physical pains and mental distress in the bright smiles and chastity of fishers who are facing the spot of the labor. Clothes being shabby and skins being coarse, wisdom how to live today’s life comes out in the life of the fishers of Chagan Lake who dreams happiness without greed.

In Chagan Lake, the legend of Genghis Khan breathes, who founded Mongolian empire about 800 years ago and terrorized up to the Western in an ambition to conquer the world. Chagan Lake is known as the place that Genghis Khan performed ancestral rite with his 90,000 cavalry when he conquered Jin Dynasty at Horqin grassland. The mystique coming out of this legend and the rareness of traditional fishing method which has comes down for 2,000 years are the reason that I could not resist the temptation of Chagan Lake and have visited it three times for last 8 years.

At every cold winter, Chagan Lake comes to my mind, like the memory of strong life which are remembered forever…… On the day when even the bitter wind in Chagan Lake remains a missing to me, I may suddenly take my steps toward Chagan Lake.

(Postscript)
I take this chance to express my sincere and deep appreciation to Mr. Koh Won-Jae, the Photographer who gave me opportunities to take photos of Chagan Lake, Mr. Lee Jong-Gul, the Chief Officer of Yanbian Photographer Association who has exchanged good relations with me and gave full material and emotional support as a ‘hand and foot’ for me, and Mr. Yu Ok-Chun, the Deputy Mayor for Commercial Affairs of Songwon City, Jilin Province who has held invitation exhibit of Chagan Lake in 2009 for all their assistance and support granted to me.

White Sacred and Pure Promise - Chagan Lake (查干湖)

Written by : CHOI Yeonha(Independent curator, Photography critic)

The Chinese word photograph (寫眞) and sightseeing (觀光) are words that connect to each other naturally. Since 'photograph (寫眞)' is an act of drawing from truth and 'sightseeing (觀光)' is an act of seeing light, it doesn't seem an exaggeration to say that the compound word 'sightseeing photograph (觀光寫眞)' means 'seeing light and bringing truth'. Sightseeing tour, tourism and sightseeing photographs all share a similar journey. Quite interestingly, tourism and photography were always together in the history of photography. As an example, as the vast landscapes of the western parts of America could be seen through photographs, vehicles that crossed from the East to the West US evolved at a rapid pace and the tourism industry began to expand. Human desire to reach the unknown made such lands 'known', and with the help of photography, most of the lands on the globe are now within our understanding. Susan Sontag made a comment that 'camera is a sublimation of the gun' to describe how East Africa, which was a tourism site for hunting grounds, transformed into a tourism site for photographs. This is an accurate description of the strong desire modern people have of taking photographs during their tour. Just like what Roland Barthes said, among the many desires photography brings, the desire 'to actually visit the place and live in the place' is a powerful fantasy. Seeing light and capturing something are the same to modern people, and to those who embark on a journey in search of light, camera has become an indispensable medium that connects the land of humans to the world of light.

The landscapes and scenery of 'Chagan Lake', which means 'wite sacred and pure lake' in Mongolian, became well known due to the power of camera and networks. Look up the word 'Chagan Lake', and you'll find a deluge of information on it. Chagan Lake, which is located in Mongol Autonomous County in Songyuan City, the west part of Jilin Province, is one of the dam lakes in China which is 37 km long and 17 km wide. Numerous emperors of China visited Chagan Lake, broke the ice, caught fish and enjoyed them while singing and drinking. Ice fishing at Chagan Lake was designated as an intangible cultural asset in China in 2008, and many anglers, tourists and photographers visit the place. It is a place that attracts more people particularly because it adheres to the traditional way of catching fish, that is, without borrowing any powers of machinery. Fishermen living near Chagan Lake break the thick ice and catch fish using the primitive way of fishing, but their massive-scale winter fishing is just beautiful and spectacular. The faith that having winter fish from Chagan Lake will bring good luck in the New Year made Chagan Lake all the more mystical.

Won Chunho, who is a photograph planner, publishing editor and a photographer, visited Chagan Lake three times. Visiting Chagan Lake all the way from Korea requires transfer between various types of vehicles such as airplane, train, carriage and so forth. The road to shooting is long and dangerous. As soon as you arrive at the site, fierce coldness around - 20 degrees Celsius attacks you. The sky is cold and chilly, and the horizons of the frozen lake stretch far and wide without an end. Why did Won Chunho risk such a dangerous journey three times?

Those who firmly believe that the element of truth and realism are the inherent characteristics of photographs and practice it also have a strong faith that 'photographers should be in a certain place at a certain time'. However, the concept of photographic truth has always been challenged, ever since the very beginning of photography to the current age of digital images. The traditional faith and public expectations on photography will not collapse easily. The loss of the existing thing captured in photographs means disappointing the expectations on photographs, and since that is no different from deleting the records of the journey we have constantly been in to find light, the element of truth, objectivity, and the position of a photographer will become much stronger and firm like the legend of Chagan Lake.

As taking photographs and looking at them became a daily event in our life, in this era overflowing with photographs, it is all the more important to keep in mind the 'intertextuality' such as with history, culture, society and mythology while reading photographs. There may be some very personal, subjective and independent photographs, but in general, documentary photographs expand their realm of meaning by endlessly exchanging meanings between them when generating meanings. Therefore, documentary photographs will be able to present the joy of reading and power of photography to those who sufficiently draw connotations from such photographs.

It is in the same vein that Won Chunho visited Chagan Lake, the lake of legend. Multiple layers of meanings are visible in the photographic truth of Chagan Lake, which 'engages in a large scale winter fishing while adhering to the traditional way of fishing thousands of years ago'. Fish, contains in it a unique cultural meaning and artistic attractiveness in the history of social anthropology. It is used to symbolize a variety of things. Its mythological themes are mostly related to wealth and honor such as 'fertility, luck, courage, abundance, victory, success'. Moreover, fish is the most potent symbol of being 'awake' since it always has its eyes opened, and a metaphoric expression of 'potentiality' as it can swim freely in the water. People are unaware of the world of water below the 70cm-thick ice of Chagan Lake. It is only the cold winter that can walk on the wide lake. Chagan Lake is a mythical lake that wishes us a productive start of a New Year and rebirth. It is the place of hope that awakens the potential and snatches up possibilities that were lying dormant until today, like a fishing net that reels fish up deep down in the lake.

I sincerely hope Won Chunho's photo book, exhibition, and [Winter Fishing in Chagannur] released at the end of the year approach the public as well as the artist with the same amount of power contained in paintings of fish turning into a dragon In addition, I hope the power of fish 'Jumong of Goguryeo' received in the Myth of King Dongmyeong spreads to everyone welcoming the ew year. I wish you all a New Year of peace and abundance like the word "fish(漁)" and "relaxation(余)" connotate. It might also be something artist Won Chunho is already indicating through his photography practice.
